Local Bus (chicken bus) to Popoyo
When taking a bus anywhere in the country, always go to Rivas bus Terminal then transfer buses to the Las Salinas/Tola Bus. The local bus (Chicken Bus) looks like an old school buses. The buses are great for the true adventurer or traveler on a budget. Look for the bus going to Las Salinas or Tola. Beware if the bus is full it may not stop of you. Bus fares are about $2.50-$4.00 US.
Less frequently- Other Buses also go from Rivas to el Astillero and can leave you at the entrance of Guasacate, This is your best option direct from Rivas to Popoyo area. Otherwise you may have to transfer buses in Las Salinas to the Astillero Bus or walk 7 km.
Rivas to Las Salinas/Popoyo - 5:30am, 9:10am, 11am, 12:50pm, 2:30pm, 4:00pm, 4:50pm
Rivas to Guasacate - Two buses per day at 5:30am and 4:50pm.
Rivas to San Juan Del Sur - Every half hour. Last one 5:30pm. Takes about 45mins and costs 30C$.
San Juan Del Sur to Rivas - 5am, 5:45am, 6:30am, 7am, 8am, 8:25am, 9am, 9:30am, 10am, 10:45am, 11:30am, 12:10pm, 1pm, 2:20pm, 3:20pm, 5pm. Takes about 45minutes, costs 30C$

Costa Esmeralda Airport - Currently Closed
The Costa Esmeralda Airport opened in Nov 2015 and is a 30 minute dirt road drive to Popoyo. Currently La Costeña Airlines from Managua (Nicaragua) and Sansa Airlines from Liberia (Costa Rica) service the flights. Currently is 14 scheduled commercial flights per week, with 2 daily flights from Liberia International Airport on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. From Managua International Airport there are two daily flights on Saturdays & Sundays.

From Rivas you will take the paved road to Tola, after passing through the town of Tola continue on to the New Airport (Costa Esmeralda Airport), after the Airport the road will turn to dirt and continue to Las Salinas. After passing through Las Salinas as the road turn right at the Y make a hard left and then over the steel bridge. Drive about 5 km until you get to a few turns in the road then you will see a road on your left with a bunch of signs for hotels and welcoming you to Playa Guasacate with Andy Irons on a large sign. Turn left and this is there area everyone calls Popoyo (Playa Guasacate) Google map with directions.
