What' else can you do here in Nica for excitement other than surf? How about testing your skills riding a gringo hating bull at the Popoyo Rodeo? This is the "don't tell my mom I'm in a Nica" kinda rodeo for sure! No registration, completely unsanctioned, no criteria to meet... Just jump into the ring with a bunch of other loco bull riders and see how many beers it takes to recover once you get bucked off.
There's plenty of cold cerveza and traditional Nicaraguan outdoor cooking like Nacatamales, which are kind of similar to tamales however they are bigger and stuffed with rice, potatoes, green peppers, onions, tomatoes, special herbs and pork. Incredibly delicious!
This is an event that no Nicaraguan in town would ever miss! If you're traveling it's a great way to toss yourself right into the culture of Nicaragua. Simply show up and have your 30 corbabas, approximately $1.50 USD, ready for admission.
You can catch the "Fiesta de Toros", "Rodeo", here in Popoyo, Las Salinas towards the end of April and lasting to the end May every year. May is officially the beginning of the winter or invierno, and what us surfers like best, the beginning of the big swell season! So if you are interested in something more than just catching epic surf and wanting to check out some Nicaragua culture, I suggest checking out one of the many Fiesta de Toros!
