I get asked often enough, "Does Nicaragua have an Off Season?" or "Are there waves all year long in Popoyo and surrounding areas like the Guasacate Beach Break, El Astillero etc...?" The answer has been the same since I've lived here and that same answer is a major reason why I've lived here full time for the past 7 years.
It has only been a few days since my return from a 2 month SoCal mission. A trip that was long overdue! Needless to say, I'm extremely happy to be back in Nicaragua. Right away I was invited to surf with some friends and was stoked to have a fun session at a local beach break. Nothing better for a returning home surfer to be greeted by nice chest to head high dry tubes and 80 degree tropical ocean waters! So on my way home I decided I should set the record straight and let everyone know a little something about Nicaragua's two seasons, the dry season (Verano) and the wet season (Invierno). Nicaragua's surfing off season/dry season, unlike some other surf destinations, doesn't mean the waves are completely flat. As you can see from the photos we took the other day. We actually experience many days of chest to head high waves with great conditions. Yes, the juicier consistent waves bash the Nicaragua Pacific coast every rainy season, between May-October. Turns on Popoyo's Outer Reef with waves sometimes up to 30 feet! However, the off season tends to attract surfers that are more into a relaxing surf vacation. Waves during the off season naturally tend to be less crowded and more user friendly which is very attractive to less experienced surfers. Some experienced surfers like to come at this time too, at least the ones that can totally enjoy a playground style wave! Fun rip-able surf with warm tropical waters. What surfer can resist?
